This is disgusting. Really. But hey, get over it. Actually, it’s not so bad. And I know people in other countries who find our waste appalling. Heck, I know some west coasties who will kick yer butt if they find organic trash by the curb. It’s recyclable silly. I know some of you will be shocked by this – but it can be used to actually grow more food!! But whatever, I’m not here to play Miss Science today. I’m here to instill guilt. You are wasteful. You are ruining the planet. It has to stop. And this is shiny. We LOVE shiny.

So here’s the thing. Not everybody has a compost pile right by their door – for good reason. It has to rot first. Before it can do anything special. And yes, that means flies, smells and if you’re close to the country at all – maybe even free pets! So the best thing to do is put it someplace out of sight, or invest in a big compost container for the back 40 – or if you’re really lucky, take it to the curb. There are people who live in progressive places where they actually pick up organic waste alongside your other recyclables. Good places. Smart people.

But every time you peel an apple or crack and egg, you don’t want to go running out to the curb, the yard or behind the neighbor’s garage, right? By the way, coffee grounds count, too. Which is where the pail comes in.

This handy container does two things very well. Three, actually. It sits shiny and beautiful on the counter. It filters bad smells through charcoal fiber (3 months duty per). And it collects all those bits until you’re ready to aggregate them wherever your “place” turns out to be. Then dishwasher or rinse it, and start all over again. It’s only about $40 at Crate & Barrel. In fact, I’ve seen similar “crockery” models for even less – but with less, of course. And not as shiny.

Don’t do it for me. Don’t do it for the children. Heck, don’t even do it for the planet. Do it for the smug look you can make when people ask “what is that shiny thing for?” It’s my favorite part of the evening. Because you not only have a shinier, newer toy than them – you look like a better person for having it. Wonderful isn’t it? [Crate & Barrel Compost Pail]
