Rosemary is my downfall. I would put it on ice cream if I could, and I can. And I might. I’ve got plans to infuse some gin with it, seriously. I make a killer turkey meatloaf with it. I’d smoke it if it weren’t so unhealthy. There’s nothing this fabulous green can’t do for me. However, it’s a little much when I buy a loaf of Rosemary Bread and there’s a big ole stick of it poking out. Not the best way to get flavor if you ask me. And not a pleasant experience.
In fact, fresh herbs are one of the best things about food to me. And my favorite herb tool is, well - a coffee grinder. There I said it. It’s not really news to some, but it was to me. And am I ever sold.
You see, I was prepping some red taters at my friends’ house one day and they had left me alone to pick up something from somewhere. Never leave me alone. Little tip there. So I had some time to think. What I was thinking is that I make some radically pleasant roasted red potatoes- the secret is tons of herbs, garlic and a lot of time on low heat. But chopping herbs leaves them still a little too weedy and it’s always bothered me a tad. Don’t even look at me with dried. Ugh.
However, they left me with a garden full of fresh herbs, did I mention that? Including rosemary. So when I saw their coffee grinder just sitting there, staring at me - shazzam! Yeah, I know. But it was a new idea to me. And perhaps someone else out there.
I cleaned it out. Smashed in some greenery - and a whole new level of addiction was born. Sweet mother of mine did it work well. After removing all trace, I went out that night and bought myself a grinder just for herbs. Krupps is my favorite by the way. I like the lid, the design and people I know have kept them running for years, even after I’ve played with them.
By the way, I once suggested using my friends’ again (long after this episode that they knew nothing about) and you would have thought I’d just asked to roast the cat! Not where they grind their precious coffee!! What they don’t know, eh? In any case, the fine grind lets lose the aroma and oil to flavor perfectly without a bunch of stems. Sure, to be a snob I’ll toss one around the plate for art, but nobody really wants a stick in poking them while they eat.
Get one. It puts herbs in places where the texture matters as much as flavor. In the bread - oh my, is that ever nice. In fact, just mixing softened butter with blend of ground fresh greens creates a whole new ingredient to love. Dude, herb is my life. And fresh is always better. Play with blending and grinding, it beats the heck out of mortar and pestle. [ Krups Fast Touch Coffee Grinders ]
